Andy Reid picked the wrong year and the wrong sport to overhaul the Eagles roster by accumulating a Pro Bowl team of big-money players and hoping the payout would be their first Super Bowl title.
Instead, the Eagles are the season?s biggest flop and Reid, the NFL?s longest tenured coach in his 13th season, may be among several high profile coaches getting fired after the season.
Tom Coughlin could be coaching his final five games with the Giants if he doesn?t get things turned around and make the playoffs. Norv Turner, 0-6 after a 4-1 start, may have finally run out of time in San Diego. Tony Sparano has little chance of surviving in Miami, although the Dolphins are playing hard for him; Steve Spagnuolo has won only two games and the Rams are scoring just 12.7 points per game and just lost back-to-back at home to the Seahawks and Cardinals; and, Jack Del Rio has already been fired by the Jaguars, who are being sold.
Colts coach Jim Caldwell has abused the privilege of being allowed to have a down year without Peyton Manning. There?s no excuse for 0-11, even if team president Bill Polian didn?t have a capable backup on the roster. But Caldwell has not been impressive as the Colts coach anyway. He mismanaged the clock at the end of the Colts playoff loss to the Jets last season.
Reid has never been worse than 5-11, which came in his first season in 1999 after he inherited a 3-13 team. He had a 6-10 season in 2005, but otherwise has won six NFC East titles, been to the NFC title game five times and coached in one Super Bowl.
But the Eagles tried to buy their way to Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI and that?s not the way championship teams are built, especially when the offseason was wiped out by the lockout. The Eagles are 4-8 and after their disinterested ? and that?s being kind ? performance in Seattle on Thursday night. They don?t look capable of winning another game.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie?s money was not spent wisely. Lurie has been loyal to Reid for more than a decade and Reid has won for him after he was hired as an unknown assistant off Mike Holmgren?s staff in Green Bay, but every owner has his breaking point. We?ll know in another month whether Lurie will hold Reid responsible for this mess or whether he gives him another chance in 2012.
Eagles fans chanted, ?Fire Andy? during last week?s loss at the Linc to the Patriots and started leaving the stadium in the third quarter. Indifference is worse than anger. Reid has two years and a total of $10 million remaining on his contract. If he gets another head coaching job in 2012, the Eagles' financial responsible will be offset by his new contract.
Philly management completely botched the DeSean Jackson situation. He held out during part of training camp, unhappy about playing for $600,000 in the final year of his deal. The Eagles have a history of signing their best young players to new deals a year or two in advance of their contracts expire. Jackson is a dynamic player, but Philly obviously needed more convincing before investing. Jackson has had a problematic season.
